Not for Me

December 28, 2023I think listening to this might have been a bad idea. The narrators were so unenthusiastic that it was difficult to really enjoy this. The story itself wasn't what I thought it was going to be. You figure out pretty quickly that Norma is Ruthie so you're left with a pretty slow moving, depressing account of what life is like for Norma and the family that was left behind. And the things that would have added excitement: the search for a missing girl, the outrage that she couldn't be found - was missing. I thought there would be more about the Mi'kmaq but there was almost nothing other than they pick berries; everything else could have been just about any culture. It finally picks up in the last 10% of the book but by then, it was too little, too late. This just wasn't for me.

May 30, 2024An exceptional read. Written in a way that you can hear music; see nature dancing; taste the culture; and engage with the family's pain and joy on every level. Can't believe that this is the Author's first novel!
A beautifully written story

March 19, 2024Great story set in Nova Scotia and Maine. Interesting perspective of Native Americans. Reminds me a bit of Lisa Wingate.
